It isn't so important that you start cutting level. It is important that whatever orientation you start cutting in remains the same throughout the entire cut. The same way that you can't change orientation with a hole saw on a drill applies to the Mr. Manhole cutter. If you are seeing difficult cutting and badly worn Blades, Teeth and Guideshaft, This could be the culprit.
